Meet Gary May, one of the pioneers of Special Olympics Kansas and a beloved athlete whose impact continues to be felt across the state. For 30 years, Gary represented Topeka Shawnee, competing in track, basketball, rodeo, swimming, volleyball, bowling, and skiing.
From the very beginning, he approached every sport with eagerness, determination, and a desire to improve his skills. Gary wasn’t just an exceptional athlete, he was one of the biggest cheerleaders for his teammates. He celebrated every success, whether his own or someone else’s, with the same enthusiasm and joy each time. His high fives, smiles, and encouragement became a signature part of every event, inspiring athletes and coaches alike to bring their best and support one another.
Gary’s upbeat personality, boundless energy, and love for competition made him a cornerstone of the Special Olympics Kansas community. He was deeply loved and admired by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His smile could light up a room, and his kind heart left a lasting mark on all those around him.
Though Gary passed away in March 2020, his legacy endures in the countless athletes and coaches he inspired, the teams he uplifted, and the joy he brought to every event. He set an example that continues to guide our Special Olympics family today. It is our honor for Gary May to join the SOKS Hall of Fame!
