USA Games Athlete Spotlight: Steven Lawson

Hometown: Hays
Sport: Basketball

Steven Lawson has spent many years competing in Special Olympics Kansas and has become a true multi-sport athlete along the way. While basketball is his primary sport, Steven has also competed in softball, volleyball, track and field, bowling, flag football, and tennis. Through Special Olympics, he has found opportunities to set goals, stay active, and build meaningful friendships.

For Steven, the best part of competing is the people he meets along the way. Special Olympics has helped him grow his circle of friends and continue challenging himself both on and off the court. Staying consistent with practicing and exercising can sometimes be difficult, but Steven continues to work hard to stay healthy and improve his skills.

Outside of competition, Steven enjoys giving back to his community by volunteering at a local movie theater when he can. He also has a hidden talent—break dancing—and loves showing off his moves whenever he gets the chance.

Steven looks up to his dad, who he says inspires him because they enjoy spending time together and making the most out of life. As he prepares to compete at the 2026 USA Games, Steven has been practicing weekly and increasing his exercise to make sure he is ready for the national stage.

Competing at the USA Games will be a new experience for Steven, and he is excited for the opportunity. Most of all, he looks forward to meeting new friends from across the country and doing his best to bring home a win for Team Kansas.
