Meet Sheriff Jerry P. Montagne, a dedicated member of the Law Enforcement community with a career spanning over four decades. His journey in law enforcement began at the age of 14 in Sioux City, Iowa, when he joined the Police Explorers in 1974. He became a full-time law enforcement officer in 1982 and has since served with distinction, including time in the Air National Guard as a Security Policeman. Now in his 42nd year, his commitment to service is matched only by his passion for supporting the Special Olympics.
Sheriff Montagne has been involved with the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) since 1992, thanks to a nudge from fellow officer Todd Martens. Special Olympics holds a special place in his heart, particularly because of his niece, who is autistic and has competed. He cherishes the moments he was able to award her medals, saying, “When I see these athletes, they really live for these events and get their hearts into it. It’s amazing to see and be a part of.”
Throughout his career, Sheriff Montagne has been a pillar of support for Special Olympics Kansas, earning the honor of “Volunteer of the Year” in 2023. His involvement extends beyond just running the torch, as his son-in-law Zach is also a Special Olympics Kansas basketball coach in McPherson.
Outside of his work, Sheriff Montagne enjoys a variety of hobbies, including wrestling, boxing, and martial arts, where he holds black belts in both Tae Kwon Do and Judo. He is also a dedicated Oklahoma State fan and loves spending time with his eight grandchildren.
Sheriff Montagne’s dedication to LETR and Special Olympics has not only enriched his life but has made a lasting impact on the community he serves.
