USA Games Athlete Spotlight: Connor Schonlaw

Hometown: Topeka
Sport: Soccer

Connor Schonlaw, from Topeka, has been involved in Special Olympics since he was 10 years old. Over the years, he has competed in basketball, soccer, track, and softball. Special Olympics has given Connor the opportunity to play the sports he loves while forming meaningful friendships along the way. As someone who enjoys watching sports just as much as playing them, he is deeply grateful for every chance he gets to compete.

Connor faces daily challenges due to left-side weakness, which limits the use of his left hand and arm. Because of this, he constantly adapts in everyday life and in athletics. His determination and resilience show in everything he does. One of his proudest accomplishments was making the Sporting Kansas City Unified Soccer Team in 2024 and being selected as team captain.

At Washburn Rural High School, where he is a senior, Connor has been heavily involved in Unified Sports and Circle of Friends. He has qualified for State Unified Bowling the past two years and has served as the boys basketball manager all four years of high school. Outside of school, he enjoys attending Washburn University sporting events and participating in Young Life and Capernaum. He admires his younger brother, who supports him daily and always makes sure he is included.

As he prepares for his first Special Olympics World Games experience, Connor is staying in shape by walking or jogging every day. Attending the Games means the world to him, and he is thankful for the opportunity to represent his community on such a big stage. His perseverance, leadership, and gratitude make him a proud representative of Special Olympics.
