Mariana joined Special Olympics Kansas in 2014 after graduating high school and has been a dedicated athlete ever since. She competes in a wide range of sports, including softball, basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and even alpine skiing, which she recently learned and loves. She also gives back to her team by helping teach tennis to younger athletes.
Through Special Olympics, Mariana has built confidence, independence, and lasting friendships. One of her proudest accomplishments is gaining the independence to drive, a goal she worked hard to achieve through vision therapy. That independence allows her to get to work at Sprouts Farmers Market in Lenexa, where she serves as a deli clerk, preparing food and serving customers with her trademark smile.
Off the court, Mariana is a talented artist, creating vibrant paintings and ceramic art. One of her paintings was even featured in a calendar, and a local businessman commissioned several of her pieces for his office.
For Mariana, attending the 2026 USA Games means more than competition, doing her best and representing Kansas with pride. She’s been training hard by playing tennis regularly, practicing her serves, and staying active at the gym, preparing to bring her energy and determination to the national stage.
When asked what drives her, Mariana says it’s the support of her friends and family, who always encourage her to follow her dreams.
“Special Olympics Kansas has helped me with building my confidence up and in making new friends.”
Mariana, we can’t wait to cheer you on as you take the court in Minnesota!
