Athlete Spotlight: Tammy Mesias

For 45 years, Tammy has been an athlete in Special Olympics Kansas. Her journey as an athlete is nothing short of inspiring, competing in bowling, basketball, softball, track and field, and volleyball. Tammy’s passion for sports goes beyond the playing field. She recently had the opportunity to began coaching and found a love for coaching basketball, where she helps fellow Special Olympics Kansas athletes achieve their goals.

As an athlete coach, Tammy brings an unique perspective, and unparalleled enthusiasm and heart to the court. She thrives on believing in other athletes, showing them that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to. Her commitment and leadership have earned her awards such as the Inspirational Athlete of the Year and the Newcomer Award, showcasing her impact on the Special Olympics community.

Tammy’s journey hasn’t always been easy. Although she always wanted to play sports, it came with challenges. Growing up and in school, her disability limited her opportunities to play sports. That’s when she found a home in Special Olympics. “Special Olympics has changed my life,” Tammy shares. “It showed me that there are sports I can play and that I can be myself.”

Even now, while battling cancer and living on disability, Tammy remains a beacon of positivity and strength. Her advice to new athletes? “You will never be the same when you become a Special Olympics athlete. It’s about meeting new people, making new friends, and doing the sports you love.”

Tammy dreams of one day competing in the USA or World Games, but her greatest joy comes from the camaraderie and experiences that Special Olympics offers. Her dedication to helping others, both on and off the field, is a testament to her remarkable character and passion for inclusion in sports.

Tammy, you are an inspiration to us all. Thank you for showing us that with determination, courage, and love, anything is possible.

In June, Team Kansas will represent our state at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games — competing against thousands of athletes from across the country. For many, it’s the biggest moment of their athletic career.

But here’s the reality: getting our team to Minnesota doesn’t happen without serious community support. Travel, uniforms, equipment, meals, and competition fees add up fast. Every dollar raised goes directly toward making sure our athletes can focus on one thing — competing their hearts out.
