The health education resources and tools found on this page are geared towards Special Olympics athletes and other people with intellectual disabilities.
Athletes might receive referrals for follow-up care from any of the Healthy Athletes screenings, and Special Olympics Kansas is committed to assisting them find the services and resources that they require when they return to their local communities.
Special Olympics Health Messengers are athletes who are trained to serve as health and wellness leaders, educators, advocates and role models. They are leading their teams, families, friends and communities to pursue healthy lifestyles.
Open to Washburn University Students and Special Olympics Kansas athletes.
Dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training & competition experiences, Washburn University Student Recreation and Wellness and Special Olympics Kansas are joining forces to bring together people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. In Unified Sports, teams are made up of people of similar age and ability. That makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Having sport in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away.
Athletes must be 18 and older and have a valid medical release form on file with Special Olympics Kansas. This is a competitive program and while any athlete can play regardless of ability level the competition will be comparable to a mid to high level 2 division.

Week 1: Wednesday, January 29 (Informational Session/Open Scrimmage)
Week 2: Wednesday, February 5 (Practice/Scrimmage)
Week 3: Wednesday, February 12 (League)
Week 4: Wednesday, February 19 (League)
Week 5: Wednesday, February 26 (League)
Week 6: Wednesday, March 4 (Tournament)
Special: Sunday, March 15 – Unified College Exhibition Tournament at Washburn Rural HS against teams from KU, KSU and others
