LETR Spotlight: Meet Bob Sanderson, Chief, Plans and Programs – McConnell Air Force Base

Bob Sanderson began his career in law enforcement in 1971 and has been actively involved with the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) since 1989. He participates in numerous LETR events throughout the year, including Torch Runs, Tip A Cops, Cops at Donut Shops, and more. Bob is deeply engaged in the LETR initiative, McConnell Air Force Base, and the Wichita community. He currently serves on the Kansas LETR council, where he contributes innovative ideas and continues to promote the LETR movement. Notably, Bob has played a significant role in enhancing military involvement in Kansas LETR.

Bob has many cherished memories within LETR and expresses that he feels “honored to expose new law enforcement professionals to the opportunities within LETR.” He finds it fulfilling to “pass on this experience and for them to disseminate it through their roles in the United States Air Force and elsewhere. These experiences are certainly memorable for the participants.”

He is “honored to serve the Special Olympics athletes with intellectual disabilities and to enhance their lives through fundraising and awareness efforts in support of their events.” It “warms Bob’s heart” to have the opportunity to raise awareness of LETR and Special Olympics to as many people as possible. Each year, Bob volunteers at the SOKS State Summer Games in the Wichita area and enjoys witnessing the joy on the athletes’ faces during their competitions.

He says, “he has been blessed to meet so many law enforcement professionals who I would never been afforded the opportunity to meet had it not been for LETR.  From the original 5 runners, the Military Coordinator from Hawaii at the 40th anniversary celebration, the law enforcement and military representatives presenting medals at Special Olympics events are some of the highlights of my LETR experiences.  But, now I have the opportunity to have my entire family involved in the LETR and Special Olympics movement.  I couldn’t be more proud to be involved!”

Bob is a part of many various aspects of LETR and will represent Kansas LETR at the 2024 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics International Conference in San Antonio, TX, this November. Outside of his professional and LETR commitments, Bob enjoys camping, fishing, and exploring the beauty of the outdoors as well as woodworking.

We extend our gratitude to Bob for his ongoing dedication to LETR and the athletes of Special Olympics Kansas!
