Special Olympics Kansas is proud to announce the participation of two local teams in the upcoming Special Olympics North America National Unified Bowling Tournament, taking place in Las Vegas from Feb. 27 to March 1. The two local teams, Bonner Springs and The Roadrunners based out of Marshall County, are composed of five pairs.
Bonner Springs has three pairs competing, athlete Raiden Graham and partner Joe Toland, athlete Aeriana Ortiz and partner Isabella Sullivan, and athlete Matt Braithwaite with partner Ethan Cook. The Roadrunners have two pairs that will bowl in the tournament, athlete Courtney Henry and partner Hayden Peterman, as well as athlete Cody Wanklyn and partner Morris Oborny.
This prestigious tournament brings together athletes and Unified partners from across the nation, showcasing the incredible talent and spirit of inclusion that defines the Special Olympics movement. Special Olympics Kansas is thrilled to have the opportunity to represent the state on this national stage.
“I am super stoked for the opportunity to take this team to Las Vegas to bowl,” says SueAnn Wanklyn, Coach of The Roadrunners. “I am always trying to get my athletes more opportunities in the sports they compete in.”
The Unified National Bowling Tournament encourages inclusive participation by pairing Special Olympics athletes with their Unified Partners—individuals without intellectual disabilities. Together, they form teams that exemplify the principles of teamwork, friendship, and sportsmanship.
Denise Chowning, coach of the Bonner Springs team explains how this is a life changing experience for them. “Unified is so impactful, not just for the athletes but for the partners,” she said. “This is a leadership opportunity for them that they have never had.”
The two local teams from Special Olympics Kansas are eager to showcase their skills. Each athlete and partner pair will compete as a doubles team. Additionally, the two doubles teams will then combine to make a four person bowling team. Bonner Springs and the Roadrunners will both have two doubles teams and a four person team to compete.
The organization encourages the local community to rally behind the teams and pairs, sending them good luck as they embark on this exciting journey to Las Vegas. If you want to support a team, you can donate to their fundraiser here.
