USA Games Athlete Spotlight: Luis Picazo

Hometown: Bonner Springs
Sport: Soccer

Luis Picazo is in his second year participating in Special Olympics, where he continues to do what he loves and grow as both an athlete and an individual. A student at Bonner Springs High School, Luis is actively involved in Unified soccer, basketball, and bowling, while also competing in track and cross country for his school.

Luis has faced challenges along the way, including being autistic and having ADHD. One of his biggest accomplishments has been learning how to make and maintain friendships, something he takes great pride in. Another major milestone this year was transitioning into all general education classes, showing his hard work and determination to keep improving.

A passionate runner, Luis is proud to be the number two runner on his school’s cross country team. He continues to stay in shape by running regularly and practicing soccer in his free time. Outside of sports, he enjoys attending church and staying active in his community. Luis is also bilingual!

Luis credits his parents as his biggest inspiration, as they constantly encourage him to be the best version of himself. Being nominated by his school for this opportunity means a great deal to him, and he is excited to continue growing, competing, and making new friends along the way. His determination, resilience, and positive attitude make him a strong representative of the Special Olympics community.

In June, Team Kansas will represent our state at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games — competing against thousands of athletes from across the country. For many, it’s the biggest moment of their athletic career.

But here’s the reality: getting our team to Minnesota doesn’t happen without serious community support. Travel, uniforms, equipment, meals, and competition fees add up fast. Every dollar raised goes directly toward making sure our athletes can focus on one thing — competing their hearts out.
