With over 12 years in Special Olympics, Rylee has competed in basketball, volleyball, track & field, bowling, softball, and bocce. She is also deeply involved as an Athlete Leader, Athlete Spokesperson, and Secretary of Health Messengers SOKS, using her voice to advocate for and inspire others.
Rylee’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. After being hit by a car while riding her bike, she was given just a 16% chance of survival. She not only survived, but overcame incredible challenges—relearning how to breathe, eat, speak, walk, read, write, and play sports again. Living with a traumatic brain injury and an amputated leg, Rylee learned to walk with a prosthetic and continues to push forward every day with determination and grace.
Through it all, Rylee remains focused on what matters most. She says she is most proud of being alive and how far she has come, and she carries that perspective into everything she does. Known as “Smiley Rylee,” she is recognized for her constant positivity and ability to uplift those around her.
Special Olympics has given Rylee the opportunity to continue competing in the sports she loves while building confidence and meaningful friendships. She previously competed at the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games in bocce and is now preparing to represent Kansas again at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games.
Outside of sports, Rylee enjoys going to church, singing, drawing, and playing UNO. She works as a cashier at Dialogue Coffee House, a business that employs individuals with differing abilities, and continues to be an active and inspiring member of her community.
As she prepares for the USA Games, Rylee is focused on staying healthy, practicing with her teammates, and embracing every moment of this opportunity. She is excited to compete, meet new people, and represent Kansas on a national stage.
Rylee’s story is a powerful reminder of perseverance, faith, and the impact of never giving up.
