Kansas City, Kansas — Special Olympics Kansas is proud to announce the induction of five exceptional athletes into the 2024 Special Olympics Kansas Hall of Fame. The announcement, made at the 2nd Annual Victory Gala, celebrates the accomplishments and dedication of these athletes who exemplify sportsmanship, commitment, and the spirit of the Special Olympics. This year’s inductees are:
Adina Simon – Air Capitol Flyers
Adina has been a dedicated athlete with the Air Capitol Flyers for 27 years, excelling in sports such as basketball, volleyball, track & field, softball, and swimming. She has also competed in soccer, bowling, and bocce.
Adina’s commitment to improving her skills is evident in her disciplined training, including working with a swim coach, strength training, and following a healthy diet. Her dedication led her to compete in the USA Games for Track & Field in 2006 and Swimming in 2022.
Adina is known not only for her athletic achievements but also for her positive attitude and sportsmanship. She always encourages her teammates and competitors, win or lose, and is quick to offer a congratulatory hug. Her love for Special Olympics shines through her advocacy, often sharing her experience with local elementary school students and proudly showcasing her 500+ medals.
Adina’s enthusiasm for Special Olympics is infectious. She embodies the spirit of the movement, making friends, spreading joy, and inspiring others with her humility and drive. Whether cheering on others or pursuing her personal best, Adina is a role model both on and off the field.
Becky Saathoff – Douglas County Jayhawks
Becky has been a dedicated athlete with the Douglas County Jayhawks for over 20 years, and her passion for bocce has become her primary focus. Becky’s hard work and commitment led her to compete in bocce at the 2022 USA Games, which she trained tirelessly for, participated in extra practices, and even engaged in fundraising efforts to make her dream a reality.
Becky is the embodiment of positivity and dedication. She shows up on time, fully engaged in every practice and competition, and is always ready to support her teammates. Whether cheering from the sidelines or competing herself, she never quits. Becky’s leadership extends beyond her own performance, as she mentors younger athletes, offering encouragement and support to help build their confidence.
A founding member of her team, Becky has participated in numerous sports throughout her years with Special Olympics, always maintaining a positive attitude and a kind heart. She is a natural leader, inspiring her fellow athletes and ensuring the future success of her team by investing in the next generation. Special Olympics is a core part of Becky’s life, and her contributions to the program are truly extraordinary.
Carl Danielson – Hays Buffaloes
Carl has been a dedicated athlete for over 50 years, competing with The Arc of Central Plains Buffaloes. He actively participates in basketball, track, and bowling, and consistently attends every practice and competition with enthusiasm and determination. Carl is known for his positive attitude, always smiling, encouraging his teammates, and never complaining, no matter the challenge.
As one of the founding athletes of the Special Olympics Kansas program in Hays, Carl’s journey is intertwined with the history of Special Olympics in the area. His parents played a key role in establishing the program through Fort Hays State University, making Carl a pioneer for athletes in his community. His passion and commitment have helped pave the way for countless athletes to participate in Special Olympics sports.
Carl’s legacy continues to inspire both teammates and coaches, as he represents the true spirit of Special Olympics—bringing joy, teamwork, inclusion, and perseverance to every game. His impact over the decades has left an indelible mark on the program, making him a true Hall of Fame athlete.
Kiel Miller – Haysville Hornets
Kiel has been a dedicated athlete with the Haysville Hornets for over 30 years, competing in a wide variety of sports including basketball, volleyball, bocce, bowling, golf, track, tennis, cornhole, and winter sports. Kiel’s passion for Special Olympics shines through his consistent presence at every practice, always with a smile, offering high fives and encouragement to his fellow athletes.
His positive attitude and willingness to try new sports have helped him build strong friendships over the years, while also inspiring others to join Special Olympics. Kiel has proudly represented Kansas at the 2022 USA Games for bocce and the 1999 World Games for golf, achieving excellence on the national and international stage.
Even when Kiel is unable to participate due to work or injury, he remains a dedicated teammate, cheering others on and even providing transportation to those who need it. Kiel’s leadership, kindness, and unwavering support for his team have made him a role model, leaving a lasting impact on the Haysville Hornets and Special Olympics as a whole.
Rosemary Dorr – KCK Huggers
Rosemary has been a Special Olympics Kansas athlete for 53 years, starting in 1972. Over the years, she has competed in various sports including cheerleading, track & field, and her current passion, bowling. Rosemary has participated in the Standing Long Jump, Softball Throw, and running events, where her sister Eileen encouraged her to push through by running alongside her on the infield.
Rosemary is known for her unwavering dedication and positive attitude. Always early to practices and competitions, she is focused on doing her best while supporting her teammates. Her involvement with the KCK Huggers has helped raise over $60,000 for Special Olympics through fundraising events like the Bowl-a-thon, where she often leads as the top fundraiser.
Beyond athletics, Rosemary has a creative side, painting over 400 custom patio stones since 2020, with her artwork becoming sought-after auction pieces at various events. Her leadership in volunteer groups like the Civitan Orchids further demonstrates her commitment to helping others and giving back to her community.
Rosemary’s joyful spirit and dedication make her a cherished member of the Special Olympics Kansas family.
Hall of Fame athletes are selected through a rigorous process that considers their years of participation, sportsmanship, training hours, and dedication to the mission of Special Olympics Kansas. The annual nominations reflect the values and achievements demonstrated by athletes from all corners of Kansas, with this year’s honorees representing an array of sports, communities, and programs statewide.
