USA Games Athlete Spotlight: Ethan Kuhlmann

Hometown: Hays
Sport: Basketball

For Ethan Kuhlmann of Hays, Kansas, Special Olympics has opened the door to opportunities he never had growing up—and now, he’s making the most of every single one.

Ethan has been involved in Special Olympics for three years and has already made his mark as a multi-sport athlete. From basketball to track, soccer, bowling, flag football, softball, and volleyball, he embraces every chance to compete, learn, and grow. Through sports, Ethan has not only developed his skills, but also built meaningful friendships that continue to motivate him.

Like many athletes, Ethan has faced challenges along the way. He shares that he used to struggle with losing, but through his experiences in Special Olympics, he’s learned an important lesson: having fun and giving your best effort matters more than the outcome. Along the way, he’s also gained confidence in unexpected ways—like improving his number skills by learning to read and understand game scores.

One of Ethan’s proudest accomplishments came off the field. Thanks to the independence and life skills he’s developed through Special Olympics, he was able to participate in high school sports for the first time—something that once felt out of reach.

Outside of competition, Ethan stays active in his community. He works at The Arc of Central Plains thrift shop, where he sorts clothes and helps stock the sales floor. He also participates in Buffalo Adventures and Healthy Buffaloes, and enjoys spending his free time playing video games. Known for his friendly personality, Ethan says one of his strengths is that he can make friends wherever he goes.

Now, Ethan is preparing to represent Kansas at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, an opportunity that means the world to him. “I didn’t get to do these kinds of things when I was young,” he says. “Now, I have a chance to see new things and it makes me excited.”

With weekly practices and a strong support system behind him—including a mentor who has taught him a lot along the way—Ethan is ready for the next big stage. His journey is a powerful reminder of how sports can build confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging.
