Katie Horrell, from Leawood, has been a dedicated member of the Blue Valley Streaks Special Olympics team for nearly 10 years, competing in Athletics. Specializing in the 800m and 1500m races, Katie has built both her endurance and confidence through years of consistent training and competition. Being part of Special Olympics has allowed her to form meaningful friendships, stay active, and grow as both an athlete and teammate.
Katie has overcome significant challenges throughout her life. She has been hearing-impaired since birth and now uses a cochlear implant, which has greatly improved her ability to hear. She continues to work hard to learn and grow every day. While she sometimes feels nervous before big races, Katie is learning how to channel that energy into motivation to push herself even further.
She is a dedicated runner. Katie works out five days a week, running 2–3 miles each day, and has maintained this routine for nearly 20 years. Recently, she has started timing her runs and tracking distance as she focuses on getting faster. Her hard work has paid off, earning her multiple medals in Special Olympics track. She has also achieved success beyond athletics, winning first place in a speech competition three consecutive years.
Katie takes great pride in her work. She is employed part-time at Sunrise Living, where she has been involved for over 12 years. She started as a volunteer before earning a paid position two years ago. She also works part-time at the café at Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, where she prepares drinks, runs the register, and helps keep things running smoothly. Both roles reflect her passion for helping others.
Outside of running and work, Katie enjoys reading, journaling, listening to Taylor Swift, and watching shows like The Amazing Race and Dateline. She admires Patrick Mahomes for his leadership, positivity, and determination. Known for her strong memory, love for dogs, and talent in public speaking, Katie brings dedication and heart to everything she does.
This will be Katie’s first time competing at the USA Games, making the experience even more meaningful. She understands the responsibility of representing Kansas and is determined to give her best effort. With her strong work ethic, perseverance, and positive mindset, Katie is ready to make this opportunity one of the highlights of her life.
