LETR Spotlight: Remembering Walt

The Law Enforcement Torch Run and Special Olympics community mourns the loss of a pioneer.
Original Torch Runner Walt Kuykendall passed away on February 28, 2025. Walt was a
dedicated advocate for LETR and Special Olympics from the very beginning of the movement.
His commitment and legacy will continue to inspire, as he played an instrumental role in
establishing a movement that has had a lasting and positive impact on all it has touched.

Walt served his country in the United States Navy and returned to Kansas in 1972 following his
service. During that time, he was interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement and
explored opportunities with both the Overland Park and Wichita Police Departments. He was
ultimately hired by the Wichita Police Department on April 19, 1972.

Walt was one of the five WPD officers who served as an “Original Torch Runner” in June of 1981
supporting Special Olympics Kansas. He previously remarked, “Not everyone has the
opportunity to be part of the beginning of a movement that has a significant positive impact on
so many individuals.” He was both proud and humble to be involved in the LETR movement and
to serve as a Guardian of the Flame.

Walt expressed that he was “amazed and proud of the LETR members, Special Olympics
partners, and all the dedicated individuals who contributed to the growth of LETR.” He valued
the many friendships he formed within the LETR community, with Special Olympics athletes and
their families, and always appreciated the time spent together.

After his tenure with the WPD, Walt enjoyed bass fishing at Table Rock Lake and contributed to
organizing the annual Police and Fire Fishing Tournament at the same location. He also pursued
woodcarving as a hobby for over 20 years, specializing in realistic 3D carvings and depicting a
variety of animal species. Walt was a guest woodcarver at Silver Dollar City and the Kansas
State Fair on multiple occasions each year.

Walt was the only member to have participated in every Wichita Torch Run from 1981 to 2024,
including additional Torch Runs in other cities and states.

We would like to extend our gratitude to Walt for his dedicated contributions to LETR and
Special Olympics athletes in Kansas and worldwide. Walt was a founding member of a
movement that has positively impacted all who have participated in LETR or Special Olympics
events. He was a genuine advocate for individuals with intellectual disabilities and for those
serving in law enforcement. Walt, rest in peace, dear friend.
